The Diablo Valley College Latino Student Alliance, though a day late, hosted a Cinco de Mayo event in the Commons Area on Wednesday, May 6.

The event attracted a lot of students, and it turned out to be a lively celebration consisting of a live mariachi band, a DJ, dance performances, guest speakers, free food and games, including musical chairs, ring toss and a water balloon toss. Among the diverse crowd were many smiles and lots of laughter.

Sociology major Jackie Franco, 20, said the event turnout was really great and exceeded the club’s expectations.

“We wanted to set this up to promote our club and celebrate the Mexican culture, ” she said. “This is also a fund raiser for our club.”

Student Taylor Rentuma, 18, said, “This event is very interesting and fun to see people celebrating another culture. The food seemed authentic, and the music was amazing.”

Javier Sandoval, 20, said he was trying to get everyone to participate in the celebration.

“You don’t have to be Latino to participate,” he said. “It’s fun for everyone to learn more about our culture.”

“This event is a great event celebrating Cinco de Mayo,” education major Samantha Hing said. “It attracted a lot of students since it has great food and good music.”
