The Diablo Valley College women softball team split their home double header with the West Hill College Falcons. The Vikings’ season record now moves to 12-2.

The Vikings went into the game very optimistic.

“Pitching is really good and we work well as a team,” third baseman Julia Pelletier said.

After going down 1-0 in the top of the first inning, the Vikings battled back to tie the game. A past ball moved shortstop Ashley Allen to third base and the next batter, first baseman Cynthia Duenas, hit a sacrifice fly that scored Allen from third.

After they tied the game it seemed to favor the Falcons as a Viking throwing error with two outs allowed runners from first and second to score.

A couple of batters later the Falcons continued to hit the ball well, as they hit a two run home run to put them up 5-1.

In the bottom of the 6th inning the Vikings started to close in on the lead. Third baseman Julia Pelletier hit a bomb to dead center field, the two run home run brought the Vikings within two run of the Falcons with a score of 5-3.

But the Vikings could not score any more runs and they suffered their second loss of the season. Costly mistakes seemed to hinder the Vikings performance as they made base running mishaps and fielding errors.

Coach Dennis Luquet said after the loss, “We can’t make mistakes; 4 runs in one inning, [the team] can’t do that, it’s too hard to come back.”

The Vikings bounced back in the second game to win 5-2.

Ashley Allen went deep to start the string of runs in the 4th inning.

“Stay focused, start off right, work hard every day,” Allen said.
