The wins and runs keep piling up for the DVC baseball team, with its offense scoring early and often April 2 to pound conference rival San Joaquin Delta 14-2.

Tyler Gangon pitched eight stellar innings for his third win of the year, allowing just two runs on only three hits, while Travis Kruger paced the offense with three RBI’s on a three-run home run that came in the bottom of the fourth.

“It was one of the first times in my life I hit a ball that well and knew it was gone off the bat,” Kruger said.

His blast opened up the game for the Vikes, expanding their two-run lead to five.

Adam Greenberg had a three- RBI day, with Tyson Edwards and Kenny Arnerich pitching in with two RBI’s a piece.

DVC showed great patience at the plate, forcing seven walks and working the pitch count in every time at bat.

The Viking offense struck early, scoring in each of the first five innings, highlighted by two in the third, three in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

“I would have to say it was huge to jump out to a lead in the game,” Kruger said.  “We wanted to send a message, it being such a huge game in conference play.”

Costly errors by Delta sparked the Vikings’ rally in the third and fifth inning.

The Delta defense was a weak spot all game, committing six errors and putting added pressure on the pitching staff, who faltered.

Delta’s starter lasted only three innings, forcing Delta to use six pitchers throughout the game.

DVC’s offense has been clicking as of late, scoring seven or more runs in 10 straight games and topping double digits twice, while averaging a staggering 9.5 runs per game over the 10-game span.

With the win, the Vikings extended their winning streak to five games, having won nine of their last 10 and beating Delta for the second time this season.

DVC has catapulted to second in the Northern California rankings, behind only Ohlone, and fifth in the state.

The Vikings sit atop the ultra competitive Big 8 Conference with a 10-3 conference record and a 23-10 record overall.

They now travel to Sierra College on April 14 for a conference matchup with the defending state champions before coming home to play Sierra again on April 16.
