Dear Target,
Did you ever take the time to thoroughly contemplate your decision to eliminate your DEI program?
Target was once a business that was rooted in diversity and inclusiveness. As someone who fits the box of many different minority groups, your decision was a huge disappointment. By now, I’m sure you’ve noticed the impact the DEI boycott had on your business.
According to Diversity.com, your company lost a stunning twelve point four billion dollars in response to your DEI decision. Seeing those numbers places your company among the most successful financial boycotts in history.
Two weeks before you announced that you were stepping back from your DEI program, I was hired for my dream job. My first thought was to head straight to Target on my payday. I loved seeing Black-owned businesses represented at your stores, especially while living in a predominantly white neighborhood. My loyalty to your company in continuing to provide inclusive shopping experiences truly did mean something to someone like me.
You must’ve thought your company’s decision was something that would blow over. Even in your statement to Mitchell Parton, an editor for Modern Retail, you waited months to reply to the backlash. You stated that your company’s brand still caters to inclusiveness. But if that’s the case, Target, why get rid of your DEI program in the first place?
Sincerely,
Adele Berry
