The DVC volleyball team won their first game in the Big 8 Series, by defeating Consumnes River. Coming out of three previous losses, this was the Viking’s first win in the Big 8 Series.

DVC came out strong in the first set. Hard-hitting spikes sent by DVC to the opposing team made up several of DVC’s points.

Defense specialist Taylor-Marie Kanoe Pruett handled the defense on DVC’s side of the net. Keeping the ball in the air, she prevented Consumnes River from scoring, resulting in a first set win, 25-14.

The Vikings came off a little spotty at the start of the second set. Consumnes River took a four point lead, causing the DVC fans in the room some distress, but DVC was able to quickly tie the game up again, 7-7. The two teams kept a close score for the majority of the second set, but DVC ultimately prevailed, the score was 25-22.

Emotions were running high as DVC entered the third and potentially final set. The audience was amazed at the skill that was being displayed. The team’s eyes were burning with anticipation as they returned to play the game they so desperately wanted to finish.

The Vikings kept their pace with Consumnes River throughout the set with an answer for every shot sent their way. With a clear winner half-way through the set, DVC dominated the court. The final score was 25-12 for the set and 3-0 for the game.

After the game, outside hitter Noelle Vleisides commented, “I think we did really well. We had good tempo and pace.” Vleisides also attributed adjusting to the other teams tactics and making them work for their points to such a successful win.

Pruett commented on the fact that this is their first win in the series, “We were just having fun out there. I think we can be hard on ourselves. We shake it off and move on to the next play.” She also mentioned the importance of team work. “We had each others backs and played as a team and trusted each other. It’s a good feeling.”

The Vikings head out to battle San Joaquin Delta on Wednesday Nov. 14, and return home Friday, Nov. 16 to take on Sacramento City.
