DVC Choir Festival Hosts High School Singers’ Workshop

The DVC choir joined choirs from nearby high schools on campus Nov. 14 for an event that was as much workshop as concert.

Rehearsals and critiques came before and after each performances, as well as commentary and instruction by the conductors.

The DVC singers were the fourth choir to hit the stage, but they did not let the younger folks show them up, even though much attention had earlier gone to Mira Monte High School of Orinda.

The Mira Monte choir, which performed second, had instantly caught the crowd’s attention mainly due to their bilingual of singing in Spanish and English.

Although a DVC event, it was more orientated for the high school students to get a feel for bigger audiences and stages, as well as to improve their vocal skills.

DVC choral director Brett Peppo, who has been here for two years after working mostly at four-year schools for nine years, talked about the differences.

“It’s a different atmosphere [at DVC]” he said. “You don’t keep the same people as long as you would as say a four year [school].”

High school directors have those four years, and “great high schools feed into the college choirs,” Peppo said.

The DVC choir performs next on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Walnut Creek, 1801 Lacassie. Tickets will be 20 dollars in advance and 25 dollars at the door.
