After a physical three days, the Vikings pulled out a win Sunday against San Jose City College to capture the Chevron Invitational title.

DVC never trailed during the entire game and answered every San Jose run to emerge victorious 63-54.

Point guard Gary Pinkney paced the Vikings with 15 points, 11 of them coming in the first half, with the starting frontcourt of Jordan Fillmore and Anthony Turner pitching in eight and 10 points respectively.

Tyler Phillips poured in 13 points off the bench and provided the aggressive spark the DVC offense needed.

“The two kids off the bench, Tyler Phillips and Antonio Rushing, went in and really changed the inside tempo,” said Coach Steve Coccimiglio.

Most of San Jose’s points came on the backs of their big men, who controlled the offensive glass and got many second-chance baskets.

“This team is very physical on the boards,” Coccimiglio added. “Even though we won the game, I think they dominated us on the glass.”

San Jose’s best chance came at the beginning of the second half, when the team started off quickly and cut the Viking lead down to five.

DVC then started its own run, beginning when Pinkney hit a three, followed by Turner getting a put back to push the lead back to 10.

Absent from much of San Jose’s offensive attack was leading scorer, Quinston Reggins, who came into the game No. 5 in scoring, having averaged more than 22 points per game over this young season.

DVC’s team defense held Reggins to only 12 points on just three made field goals.

“We just all played perfect defense, and we helped and we helped,” said guard Benji Arvizu when asked about stopping Reggins. “When we played zone, everyone was talking and just communicated.”

The Vikings beat on Columbia College 75-39 on Friday in the first round of the Chevron International, and then on Saturday beat Cabrillo College in the second round of the tournament to advance to Sunday’s championship game.

This makes the Vikings’ second, consecutive tournament win. Breezing through the Black Oak Tip-off Classic on November 14-16, with their only close game coming in the first round against West Hills.

Rebounding nicely after losing its first two games of the season, DVC now has six straight wins to bring its record to 6-2.

San Jose used a full court press from the beginning and kept it on the entire game, trying to speed up the tempo and come out quick with baskets by their big men.

The action was back and forth for the first 10 minutes of the half before Pinkney hit back to back threes and forced San Jose to use a timeout.

The Vikings never looked back, trading baskets with San Jose for the rest of the first half to go into the second half with a 31-24 lead.
