North entrance construction detours students

Due to construction at DVC’s north entrance, student Angela Page had to park by the gym for her class in the Math Building. That wouldn’t have been painful, but she’s walking with a crutch due to a recent knee injury.

“I can’t wait till it’s done because the detours take way too long to get to class,” Page said.

The construction, part of the DVC Commons Project called “The Function,” began in August 2012 and is supposed to be done by Oct. 31 this year.

But in the meantime, the Art Building can only be reached from Parking Lot 8, and students who otherwise use the front entrance staircases have to find other routes to their classes.

“It’s driving everyone crazy,” DVC student Mathias Armstrong said.

“We don’t know what’s going in there,” Rommel Cipriano, an Architecture and Engineering student said. “They need to put to some pictures up so we know what’s going on.”

Cipriano added, “I think they’re doing something positive but they gotta hurry up!”

According to Director of Communications Chrisanne Knox, the “The Function” project will widen the front entrance stairs and will add an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) complaint drop-off area, multiple seating areas and new light fixtures.

“You can never have significant progress without some pain,” Knox said.

Students using wheelchairs are advised to use Parking Lots 1 and 7 for pickup and drop-off. Students with disabilities who need help getting to class from the bus transit center in Lot 8 should seek help with Laurence Orme at 925-969-2173.
