Amidst the daily hustle and bustle of Diablo Valley College, Club Day has once again graced the plaza in front of the DVC Student Union.

Armed with a multitude of brightly colored signs, various props and edible bribes, over a dozen tables lined the cafeteria and Student Union attempting to gain new members this semester. The entire event featured a very happy and welcoming atmosphere.

Unfortunately, despite the gleeful enthusiasm of these club leaders, the crowd of potential new members was scarce for most of the event.

“There use[d] to be more cubs and more people. This semester didn’t have as much,” observed Dance Club member Victor Liang.

In addition to the lack of a crowd, the majority appeared to be from one group – students of the campus’ English as a Second Language (ESL) program. According to the ESL instructor, Ben Wells, the ESL students are required to attend Club Day as a means of broadening their horizons and improving their English skills. Most of these ESL students gravitated toward the International Club.

The lack of student participation could also be attributed to the lack of Club Day advertisements around campus. Several students walked by the event with confused looks on their faces, while others only happened to stop by after stumbling upon the event on their way to class.

Despite these technical struggles, the majority of the clubs were very positive about the overall event’s turnout. Lance Gregne, a member of the DVC Movie Club, noticed the abundance of international students at the event, but was happy that the club received over 60 new member signups over the two- day span of Club Day.

While Club Day could be considered a minor success, it might be wise to increase student awareness of such a fun event for the next time.
