Interest in business affairs increases

This semester, a growing number of Diablo Valley College students are taking interest in business-related activities across campus.

The establishment of the DVC Finance Club, the DVC Investment Club and the DVC Consulting Club, in addition to existing business clubs like Enactus and Phi Beta Lambda, has led to several more business-led initiatives around campus.

New clubs receive a steady stream of curious students who attend weekly meetings and participate in campus initiatives and club socials, while established clubs enjoy expanding membership and participation in regional conferences.

Weihao Xia, 19, activity coordinator for the DVC Finance Club, is particularly pleased that students have begun to show more enthusiasm toward business-related activities on campus.

“I think this shows that a lot of students are interested in business and that it is a practice that is not restricted to business majors only,” he said. “This proves that a lot of students are proactive and eager to begin their entrepreneurial experience here in DVC.”

“We currently have 130 members in Phi Beta Lambda right now,” said President of DVC Phi Beta Lambda Shireen Aboukhalil. “Compared to last year, there has been about a 13 percent increase in membership. Recently, 30 of our members took part in the State Fall Business Leadership Conference, where we won the chapter with the largest attendance.”

President and founder of DVC Consulting Club Eli Pipersburg said “There has been, and there will continue to be, rising awareness and participation in business-related activities on campus. We are a new club and are currently looking for ways to expand our efforts to make this club appealing to students across different majors.”

He urged students to know that “we as students have to realize that business skills are valuable anywhere you go and joining a business club is a way to practice those so called managerial skills in a fun and educational manner.”
