The DVC women’s basketball team came out with a great conference win against American River College on Tuesday, Jan. 14, with a final score of 92-78.

The game started off in a foot race between the two teams, but the Vikings started to pull away. Coming off of two straight conference losses to Sierra College and Cosumnes River College, the Vikings fought hard for this win. Defense was key, as the Vikings’ defense played extremely well all night. The team ended the night with 17 steals and 37 rebounds.

The game’s leading scorer, #25, Dericka Ware, who averages 23.7 points per game, had a game high of 24 points. Ware also played a part on the defensive side accounting for five of the teams 17 steals.

After the game, point guard Sabrea Coleman felt that they “…played as a team and that it was a great win. [It] got us off of the losing streak we were on.”

Sabrea ended the night with 10 points, five steals  and seven assists during Tuesday night’s win.

Being that the Vikings lost four games prior to this win, coach Ramaundo Vaughn was pleased after the game.

“We just got back to the basics. We’re small so we wanted to get out running and pressure them because we haven’t been doing that the past couple of games,” Vaughn said.

The Vikings play in one of the toughest divisions in the state and have an overall record of 12-6, but are 1-2 in the conference. Their next game is against San Joaquin Delta College on Jan. 21st.
