Letter to the editor: Power in positive thinking

Although positive thinking is encouraged in the learning environment, many positive thinkers are often referred to as dreamers, or the unrealistic. However in a society where we are raised to have goals and ambitions, wouldn’t it be impossible to achieve them without dreaming? As a college student surrounded by high expectations, the ability to dream has given me the hope I need to pursue my own accomplishments.

The problem is that it is impossible to be a positive thinker all the time. It is the sign of brilliance when a professor can transform a mistake into encouragement to continue. Therefore I have realized that positivity is the solution to my learning obstacles and the opportunity to fantasize about my future has helped me sculpt my present.

According to the New York Times Article, Discovering the Virtues of a Wandering Mind, “A wandering mind can protect you from immediate perils and keep you on course toward long-term goals.”

Dreaming can be the method for students to bypass the daily stress of school and focus on what they are looking forward to in the future. Positive thinking is the door to discovering which path is worth following and the professors who do not give their students a chance to relish in their successes, are detrimental to their growth. However the question I have, is what does it take to relish in the success of the potential future?
