Vikings get revenge on Consumnes River

Over this spring break the Diablo Valley baseball team has been scheduled to play three games, one of which was a home game against Cosumnes River College. The game was originally scheduled to take place on April 2nd but was rescheduled because of poor weather conditions and instead took place on April 4th. The game began at one o’clock during a particularly windy time of day with gusts reaching up to 20 mph.

Diablo Valley’s previous two games against Cosumnes River College ended in defeat with scores of 8-to-0 and 7-to-5 respectively. This week the teams seemed to be evenly matched and several innings passed without either team gaining a run.

Within the first inning Diablo Valley was able to execute a double play, although neither team was able to score a run. Thanks to a triple by Bryan Case, Cosumnes River was able to score two runs in the second inning while Diablo Valley managed to score only one.

The score remained locked at 2-to-1 throughout the third and fourth innings. In the fourth inning each team was only able to send three players to bat before their side was retired. A double by Devon Alexander allowed Diablo Valley to take the lead in the fifth inning and score two runs with a score of 2-to-3. Cosumnes River quickly regained their lead in the sixth inning by scoring two runs in just one play with a total of three runs during the inning, leaving the score at 5-to-3.

In the sixth inning Diablo Valley quickly made up the difference between the scores. Each of the three players to bat for Cosumnes Valley were forced out at first base. With bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning Diablo Valley scored two runs, one right after the other.

The eighth inning left the teams at another stalemate, with Cosumnes River making the only hit in the inning. In the ninth Cosumnes River was able to score a single run before getting all three Diablo Valley batters out before they could complete a hit in the bottom half, sealing a narrow victory with a score of 6-to-5.
