DVC’s philharmonic orchestra and choir will join forces for a concert Dec. 5 that features Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No.6 in D Major and selected opera favorites from the likes of Mozart, Verdi, and Gilbert and Sullivan.

In the past, the orchestra has performed such famous pieces as Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf.

Conductor Owen Lee described the Dvorak symphony as “technically approachable, very attractive to listen to, and it contains many useful lessons for playing in an orchestra.”

Lee, who also chairs the music department, said the orchestra works to bring people of all musical backgrounds together to perform.

“Since I’ve directed the orchestra,” he said, “we have collaborated with the DVC choirs once per semester because there is so much literature for chorus, solo voices or voices for orchestra.”

The orchestra performs twice each semester and is intended to give music majors orchestral training. It is comprised of faculty, staff, and students.

“Every year, we feature a student composition or two,” Lee said. “It is very rare that an undergraduate has their work performed at an orchestra, so I make sure that happens.”

The concert is at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for pre-sale.
